We had few friends visiting us from the Ayurveda college. My partner Dr.Gaoncar and My daughter Dr.Koushik were all in conversation, talking about disturbed manifestations due to improper eating. Of course the kind of food, and the eating schedule was discussed for a while, a couple of days after this the truck drivers went on strike and there were no vegetables coming in from Belgaum. Of course most people went ballistic.
Yet eating locally produced food makes sense since it is fresher and the life force is stronger. The worst the frozen food, bottled fruit juices and works. The more freshly picked the food the healthier it is, we do this we tend to pick just what is required. Not only is this healthy for us, it is also healthy for the planet. The same goes for our choice of cooking oil.
One great place to begin the adventure of eating locally is the farmer’s market, I do not mean the supermarket’s vegetable vending section I mean hands on. If you are in Udupi it is the Admar Oni, if you are goa is the bustand market. These are usually home grown and got directly from the farmerers, it is unlike the supermarket fare which is usually dictated by the shelf life and durability in transport.
Bombay has now come up with a weekend farmer’s market people who have balcony gardens or grow stuff on their window sill get their excess products that is bartered or sold.
We talk about rescuing our planet, and but either unclear or reluctant to do it. Local farmer’s market and our own window sills are great places to do it.
